Brent Hayden, OLY
Born: Maple Ridge BC, 1983
Hometown: Mission BC
Current Residence: New Westminster BC
Brent Hayden is widely regarded as the fastest swimmer in Canadian history. Representing Canada for a decade, Brent made sport history with his World Championship title in 2007, and his Olympic Bronze Medal in 2012, a first for any Canadian in the blue ribbon event - the 100m freestyle. Despite retiring in 2012, he remains the current Canadian Record Holder in 6 events. He is a BC Sports Hall of Fame inductee (Class of 2013), a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal Recipient, and was named the 2007 Canadian Athlete of the Year.
Brent's love of photography began as early as he can remember, but it was enrolling in his high school photography class in Grade 11 that really sparked his passion. But photography became more to Brent than just creating art, it became a source of meditation when he needed to escape from the stress of being a high performance athlete. It was during these toughest times that you would find Brent walking along a beach, camera in hand, getting lost in his viewfinder. Over the years, he honed his specific style - a very minimal, often center weighted, image. He attributes this to his feeling when he is standing behind the blocks, taking deep breaths, feeling his heartbeat against his chest, while focusing down the black line of his lane towards the wall at the opposite end drowning out the distractions that are all around.
Although retired from sport, Brent continues to pursue his passion of photography.
